New to Cyber Security? Let’s get it started!
If you are thinking of starting studies in Cybersecurity or planning to gain some knowledge in this field, you might wonder what could be some sources to start with.
In this article I have brought some of the resources, which you would also find in curricula of cyber security masters programme. Majority of courses that I suggest to keep an eye in this article are free and would enable you to learn more. From introduction to intermediate level and covering different topics such as fundamentals of cyber security, network and network security, OSINT, vulnerability management, digital forensics, mobile app security, kali linux or learning paths for certifications such as CompTIA Network+ CompTIA Security+ CompTIA A+, CEH etc.
Cybrary
Cybrary, which is also my favorite one, provides a huge variety of courses (free and paid) to learn. This platform includes courses, advice on career, virtual labs, tests to practice and assess yourself.
Coursera
Coursera offers massive open online courses (MOOC) in cyber security provided from Johns Hopkins University, The University of Edinburgh, University of Amsterdam, University of Virginia and Google just to name a few.
Heimdal Security
Offers a free Cyber Security for Beginners in five weeks if you subscribe. This course covers cyber security basics, tools & tactics, detection and prevention, online protection and different other useful cyber security skills.
Udemy
Udemy is a well known e-learning platform. Using cyber security as a keyword, it provides over 70 free and 1000+ paid courses ranging from preparation for certifications in Cisco, CompTIA, CE or ISO/IEC.
edX
edX has a partnership with no less than MIT, University of Washington, KTH and provides a huge range of interesting topics in the field that are not very common in other platforms: critical infrastructure, cyber security economics, cyber warfare etc. edX platform is also special because the courses are offered for free and one has to pay only if he/she wants to get a certificate.
Sans Cyber Aces Online
SANS Cyber Aces comes as an initiative of SANS organisation with the aim to make cyber security available for everyone and help individuals discover and develop skills and careers in cyber security regardless of role and level.
Their free, online courses teach the fundamentals of cyber security to program participants, organize state-wide competitions, and helps connect participants to employers.
Pluralsight
Pluralsight is another platform that provides free trial courses in cyber security. Although its pricing might be costly for a student budget I would suggest to sign up for the trial and discover its content.
Other
Other platforms that do provide less relevant content with cyber security masters course are:
Udacity (cyber security for industrial organizations, cyber security in system design) or Null-byte (provides general tutorials, readings). If you have some experience and want to apply for the masters program I strongly recommend to have a look also in CTF platforms: HackTheBox, Hacking-Lab, RangeForce and HackerOne.
